While life has been lifing, my book reviews (and honestly, my reading updates) have taken a back seat. To be fair, I am still reading a lot, but my time has been dedicated to the books I'm currently editing.
Since I can't share those with you yet, I figured this would be the perfect time to bring back some backlist book reviews from my original blog. And honestly, I often read books that were published years ago (they’re so much easier to grab immediately from the library)!
I originally read and reviewed You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott back in 2016. While I didn’t remember the storyline before revisiting my thoughts, I did remember absolutely loving this psychological thriller novel.
You Will Know Me follows Katie and Eric Knox, parents who have dedicated their lives to their fifteen-year-old daughter Devon—a competitive gymnast and Olympic hopeful.
When a violent death shakes their tight-knit gymnastics community just weeks before a major competition, everything begins to unravel. As rumors spread and secrets surface, Katie becomes increasingly drawn to the mystery, exposing the dark side of elite gymnastics culture, ambition, and obsession.
Megan Abbott’s latest novel, You Will Know Me, dives deep into the intense world of competitive gymnastics, exploring the pressure placed not just on athletes, but on their families.
Told from a mother’s perspective, the story centers on Katie and her family as they navigate the aftermath of a tragic hit-and-run involving a member of their community. This domestic suspense novel blends mystery with emotional family dynamics in a way that keeps you constantly questioning what’s really going on.
Amidst the shock of Ryan’s death, Katie struggles to understand not only what happened to Ryan, but she’s also forced to confront uncomfortable truths about her own family. Katie is blind to the interworking of her family and the pressure her daughter is under to win her competitions on the road to the Olympics, but it seemed she was either naïve or just didn’t want to see the reality of her family’s dynamics.
The book was well-written, and the perspective made it the most intriguing because it’s generally expected that the one who is telling the story from their point of view is the main character. In this case, Abbott keeps readers guessing, never quite sure whether the story is really about Katie, Devon, or even husband/father Eric, but at the end of the day they are a family – a unit – and how ambition, jealousy, and obsession ripples through each of their lives affects all of them.
I loved getting into the politics of the competitive gymnastics culture and parental pressure in sports. Having known people in that world, I found the portrayal both fascinating and unsettlingly realistic. Megan Abbott did a great job of balancing the family drama, psychological tension, and mystery seamlessly.
Although Katie was annoying in her choice to remain disengaged and almost feel as if she was above the other parents for doing so, her character was relatable and honest. Devon was the only character that was difficult to know or relate to, but told from a mother’s perspective, it makes sense that a teenager would maintain her stoicism and remain distant.
The most interesting aspect of this book was how everyone’s lives both converged and diverged on one specific night. Things are always happening, but it’s easy to forget all of the little details in the moment, and looking back with the realization of their importance, how many of those details can be easily recalled? Hindsight is 20-20, as Megan Abbott skillfully demonstrates in this standout psychological suspense read.
*I received this book through BookSparks for participating in #SRC2016 in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

HEY, I’M CYNTHIA…
Welcome to my personal book haven! I’m all about diving into stories and chatting with fellow bookworms.
I read pretty much anything and everything in the fiction world, except for horror (it’s just a little too spooky for me!). But give me a twisted psychological thriller, and I’m in.
I also love reading ARCs (advance reader copies), so you’ll often find my reviews up before or right on the book's publication day.
Happy reading, and let’s get lost in stories together!
